How it works

Three steps, no eyeballing.

No vanishing points to trace, no focal length to guess: just points you can recognise in the photo and in the model.

  1. Load the photo

Open the photograph of the building or scene. The focal length comes from the EXIF data when it is there, and photos shot in portrait orientation are turned upright automatically.

  2. Pick at least four points

Click a point on the photo and the same point in the model, using your program's snap. From the fourth point on, the camera solves itself and updates with every adjustment.

  3. The camera is ready

Position, orientation and focal length, with the pixel error of every point. The camera enters the scene the way your program expects.

Features

Everything 3DG PhotoMatch does.

The features of the current release: 1.2.9 for 3ds Max, 1.2.8 for SketchUp. Where a feature is available in one program only, it is marked.

The solve

  • Camera position, orientation and focal length from at least four points
  • Automatic re-solve whenever a point is added, moved or deleted
  • Pixel error for every point, and what it amounts to on the photo
  • Focal length read from the EXIF and checked against the points: if they disagree, the points win
  • The solve runs on your computer: photos and models never leave it

The points

  • Pick on the model with your program's snap
  • Numbered markers in the viewport, so you can find every point again
  • Draggable points for precise corrections
  • Zoom and pan on the photo, and one key to see it whole again
  • Point list with the error of every pair

The camera

  • Physical, V-Ray, Corona and Standard 3ds Max
  • Camera Convert: from one camera type to another, keeping the same framing 3ds Max
  • PhotoMatch Edit: reopen a camera with its points and update it 3ds Max
  • Camera Recall: brings back the photo and the render frame 3ds Max
  • Lens distortion carried over to the V-Ray camera 3ds Max
  • A scene with the solved camera and the photo in the background SketchUp

Every day

  • Interface in eight languages, switched from the panel
  • Portrait photos turned upright according to the camera's orientation data
  • Final report: focal length, error, and why a focal length was rejected
  • Close halfway through and it asks whether to create the camera or discard the work 3ds Max
  • 72 hours of work even without a connection
  • A notice when a new version comes out

Programs

The same solver, inside your program.

There is only one engine: what changes is how the camera enters the scene, because every program has its own habits.

Available · version 1.2.9

3ds Max

2025 · 2026 · 2027

You get a camera with position, rotation and focal length already set: Physical, V-Ray, Corona or Standard. The plugin is pure Python and uses what 3ds Max already has: nothing extra to install.

Available · version 1.2.8

SketchUp

2019 to 2025

You get a scene with the solved camera and the photo in the background. The solver is written in Ruby and runs inside SketchUp: no external libraries.

The method

Measure, don't estimate.

  1. 01

    Numbers, not impressions

Where the usual tools ask you to adjust by eye, 3DG PhotoMatch calculates. And it tells you how far off it is, in pixels, so you can decide whether that is good enough.

  2. 02

    Your files stay yours

The solve happens on your computer. Photos and models are not uploaded anywhere, and your work does not depend on a remote service.

  3. 03

    Inside the program you use

No extra applications to learn, no formats to convert: the plugin works inside your program and follows its conventions.

  4. 04

    Born in production

Every feature starts from a problem met in architectural visualisation, and is tested on real projects before it reaches you.
